Plug in solar is a small solar system that connects to your home through an ordinary 13 amp socket. Panels go on a balcony railing, a flat roof or a garden building, a micro inverter converts the power to mains AC, and whatever you generate is used by your home first. It became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026, provided the kit meets the limits set out in the new rules.
What is a plug in solar system?
A plug in solar system — also called plug and play solar, or a balcony solar kit — is the smallest kind of solar generation you can own. There is no roof work, no scaffolding, no MCS installer and no rewiring. A set of lightweight panels connects to a single micro inverter, and that inverter ends in a normal three-pin plug.
The electricity you generate feeds into your home's ring main and is used by whatever is switched on at the time: the fridge, the router, a laptop, a freezer. Nothing is exported and nothing is stored. On a sunny weekday when the house is empty, the base load of a typical home still soaks up most of what a 720W array produces.
It suits people rooftop solar cannot reach. If you rent, live in a flat, have a leasehold roof you do not control, or simply do not want a five-figure installation, this is the version of solar that is actually available to you.

The panels are the part people underestimate. At 2.3kg each they are roughly a tenth the weight of a framed glass panel, which is what makes them safe to strap to a balcony railing three floors up. Glass panels on railings are a wind-load problem; these are not.
Is plug in solar legal in the UK?
Yes, in Great Britain, since 27 August 2026 — as long as the kit meets every one of the new conditions. The headline limits are an inverter output no greater than 800VA and 3.5A, panels no greater than 2,000W at STC, a factory-moulded BS1363 plug rather than a rewired one, and a fuse no higher than 5A.

Solar plug in kits: who are they for?
If you have somewhere that gets a few hours of sun and a socket within five metres, a solar plug in kit will work for you. In practice our customers fall into four groups.
Flats and balconies
Panels strap to the railing. Nothing is drilled, nothing is permanent, and the whole system comes with you when you move.
Renters
The only form of solar most tenants can have. Worth a short conversation with your landlord first, since nothing is fixed to the building.
Garden offices & workshops
Panels on the roof of the building, powering it while you work and the house when you are not out there.
Homes that cannot have rooftop solar
North-facing roofs, conservation areas, leasehold roofs, or anyone unwilling to spend five figures to start.
How much electricity will a plug in solar kit actually produce?
How much a 720W array produces depends on aspect, shading and season, so we publish no output figures; whatever it generates offsets your daytime use first.
What matters more than the annual figure is how much of it you use. Because the system feeds your home first and nothing is exported, output that coincides with your base load — fridge, freezer, router, standby — is output you do not have to buy. People who work from home get more from these kits than people who are out all day.
Do I need an electrician to fit one?
No. The system is designed to be fitted by the owner: mount or strap the panels, connect them to the inverter, plug the inverter into a socket. What you do have to do is register the installation with your network operator using a G98 form within 28 days, which is a short online form and costs nothing.

Why does ENA registration matter?
The ENA type test register lists the inverter models that have been verified against the grid connection standard. If the inverter in your kit is not on it, the installation does not meet the rules, whatever the listing on a marketplace says.
This is the single thing worth checking before you buy anything from anyone. Plenty of cheap kits appeared the week the law changed, and not all of them use a listed inverter.
