What changed for plug-in solar in the UK in 2026?

For years the practical position in the UK was that a small solar system had to be wired in by an electrician and treated much like any other generator on the property. On 24 March 2026 the Government announced that it would update the connection rules - G98 and the wiring regulations - so that plug-in solar systems of up to 800W could connect to a domestic mains socket, provided they meet tailored safety standards. BS 7671 Amendment 4 followed on 15 April 2026. On 16 June 2026 the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published its independent electrical safety study, which tested representative plug-in systems and found they could operate safely on ordinary domestic circuits while also finding real differences in quality between products.

On 16 July 2026 the Government published its response to the plug-in solar consultation together with an interim product specification. The regulations were laid in Parliament the next day and came into force on 27 August 2026. The specification sets out what a plug-in system connected to an existing low-voltage installation through a standard UK plug and socket has to satisfy - including a maximum 800W AC output, anti-islanding protection, a certified micro-inverter and a BS 1363 plug - and it sits alongside G98 and BS 7671. What does a plug-in solar system actually consist of?

A plug-in system has four parts. The panels convert sunlight into direct current. A micro-inverter converts that direct current into the alternating current your home uses and, critically, is the component that has to behave correctly on the grid - matching frequency, shutting down if the mains fails, and never exceeding its rated output. Cabling carries the power from the inverter to the connection point. What are G98 and BS 7671, and who do you notify?

G98 is the Energy Networks Association's engineering recommendation for connecting small generators to the low-voltage network. BS 7671 is the UK wiring regulations. The interim specification refers to it because a plug-in system still connects to a fixed electrical installation, and that installation has to be in a fit state to receive it. The specification does not turn a domestic socket into a generator terminal by magic; it sets conditions under which the socket connection is acceptable. What should you check before buying a plug-in solar kit?

  • The inverter's registration. Look for the inverter on the ENA Register, by model. The Hoymiles HMS-800-Pro is stated as registered; a bargain inverter with no listing is a product you cannot notify correctly.
  • The plug. The framework expects a factory-moulded UK plug to BS 1363 with an appropriately rated fuse - not a rewired or adapted plug, and no extension leads, multi-way adaptors or travel adaptors in the chain.
  • Output. Inverter AC output of no more than 800W, with anti-islanding protection; panel capacity that suits the inverter rather than dwarfing it.
  • The manufacturer's confirmation. A statement that the exact model meets the interim product specification, and installation instructions that describe the plug-in connection.
  • Existing generation. Any solar already on the property is counted together with the new system for G98.
  • No battery in the box. Storage falls outside the current specification, which the Government is looking at separately; a plug-in kit that includes one is not covered by these rules.

Nothing in the 2026 framework removes those obligations, and a system you can unstrap and take with you is an advantage here. Does plug-in solar suit a garden office or workshop?

Often better than a balcony. A garden office or workshop tends to have a wall or roof that faces the sun without a neighbour's balcony above it, it is used during daylight, and the appliances in it - lighting, heating, a computer, small tools - are exactly the daytime loads a small system offsets. The panels fix to the building; the inverter plugs into the outbuilding's supply, which is itself fed from the house, so the same G98 notification and wiring considerations apply.

When the building is not in use, generation still flows back through the supply to the house, so a system on a workshop that sits idle at weekends is not wasted.
