How to choose a nail dust extractor for a UK salon: in-desk, desktop or wall-mounted, what HSE sheet SR13 expects of extraction at the table, filters, noise and what to ask any supplier.

A nail dust extractor is a piece of local exhaust ventilation that captures filing dust at the nail station, before it reaches the technician's face. The test that matters: HSE's nail bar sheet asks for extraction where "nails should be over the downdraught or as close to the extraction hood as possible." Whatever format you buy, judge it by how close the intake sits to the file.

What does a nail dust extractor need to do?

It needs to capture dust at the point it is created and either send the air outside or filter it properly before returning it to the room. Those are the two things HSE sheet SR13 asks of extraction in a nail bar: local exhaust ventilation "in the form of a downdraught table or a movable hood," and extracted air "discharged to a safe place outside the building" or "correctly filtered before being returned."

That definition rules some things in and some things out. A fan that blows dust away from the technician and into the room is not extraction. A room purifier in the corner is general ventilation, which SR13 also asks for, but it is not the local exhaust ventilation the sheet names first. And a unit whose filter has loaded up is no longer controlling anything, which is why filter access and replacement cost belong in a buying decision, not as an afterthought.

The reason HSE is specific about position is physical. Filing dust is produced under the file, a few inches from the technician's face. Every inch between the file and the intake is an inch in which dust can drift upwards. The formats below differ mainly in how they solve that geometry.

In-desk or downdraught: when does the table make sense?

An in-desk or downdraught extractor is built into the work surface, with a grille the client's hands rest over so that dust is pulled downwards as it is created. It is the format HSE names first, and it is the most direct answer to the "nails over the downdraught" instruction, because the hands sit on the intake by default rather than by discipline.

It suits a salon that is fitting out or refitting stations, where the desk can be chosen or cut for the unit, and where technicians work at a fixed position all day. The airflow is where the work is without anyone having to position anything. The trade-offs are practical: it is tied to one desk, retrofitting an existing table means cutting it, and the filter sits below the work surface, so access has to be designed in.

Desktop units: what are they good for?

A desktop nail dust extractor sits on the work surface, usually with a padded rest so the client's hands lie over the intake. It is the format most salons start with, because it needs no fitting, moves with the technician if stations change, and can be tried at one desk before the whole salon is equipped.

The good ones share three features: an intake large enough that the hands naturally cover it, a hand rest that makes the correct position the comfortable one, and a filter that can be reached and replaced without tools. The weak ones are compact boxes with a small grille that the technician has to remember to work over; in a busy afternoon that discipline slips and the dust goes where it always went.

A desktop unit is also the sensible choice for a mobile technician or a home-based salon, where a fixed installation is not possible. It does take desk space, and in a very small station that is a real cost. Wall-mounted: when is it the right choice?

A wall-mounted unit frees the desk entirely and treats the station from the side or above, typically with a hood or arm brought close to the hands. It is the format for a salon where desk space is tight, where the wall behind the station is close enough for the intake to reach the work, and where the owner wants the units to be part of the fit-out rather than something that sits on every table.

The question to ask of a wall unit is the same one HSE asks: how close is the intake to the file? A wall unit whose hood sits at the hands does the job; one bolted high on the wall and left there is general ventilation with a better view. Wall-mounted units are also where vapour extraction and dust extraction most often come together, because the housing has the room for both an activated carbon stage and a particulate stage.

None of the three is right for every salon, and a mixed fit-out is common: in-desk units at the permanent enhancement stations, a desktop unit at the manicure table that doubles for other treatments, a wall unit where monomer is used most. What should not vary is the principle - capture at the nail, filter properly or vent outside.

What about filters, noise and running costs?

Filters are the running cost, and the honest supplier will tell you so up front. A dust extractor needs a particulate stage; a station where monomer is used needs an activated carbon stage as well, because carbon is what holds vapour and odour. Ask how often each filter is changed under a full day's use, what a replacement costs, and whether it can be changed without tools. HSE's sheet asks salons to maintain equipment "as advised by the manufacturer" and to keep a log of filter replacement, so a unit with a clear schedule makes compliance easier to evidence.

Noise is the other daily cost. A unit loud enough that technicians switch it off between clients is a unit that does not run. Listen to it in a quiet room before you buy, or ask for a video with sound. Remember also the statutory side: HSE says LEV needs a thorough examination and test by a competent person at least once every 14 months, whatever format you choose.

What should you ask any supplier before buying?

  • Where does the intake sit relative to the client's hands, and can I see it in use?
  • Does the unit have a particulate stage, an activated carbon stage, or both - and which does my station need?
  • Is the air filtered and returned, or ducted outside? If returned, what does the filter capture?
  • How often are filters changed under a full day's use, what do they cost, and are they in stock?
  • How loud is it, and is there a lower setting for consultations?
  • What is the warranty, and who do I ring when something goes wrong?

Do I need a nail dust extractor by law?

Is a desktop extractor as good as an in-desk one?

It can be, if the technician works over the intake. The in-desk format makes that automatic; the desktop format relies on the hand rest and the habit. Judge either by how close the intake sits to the file during a real treatment.

Does a dust extractor also remove monomer smell?

Only if it has an activated carbon stage. Dust and vapour are different hazards: particulate filters catch dust, carbon holds vapour and odour. Stations using acrylic monomer generally need both.

How often do the filters need changing?

On the manufacturer's schedule for that unit, checked before work each day; HSE asks salons to maintain equipment as the manufacturer advises and to log replacements. Ask the supplier for the schedule and the replacement price before you buy.

Can I use one extractor for two stations?

Not as local exhaust ventilation. The intake has to be at the nail being filed, so each working station needs its own capture point, even if a wall unit serves two stations with two arms.
