A monomer extractor captures acrylic vapour at the nail station, before it reaches the room. Unlike a fan, which moves the smell somewhere else, an extractor draws the vapour through activated carbon that adsorbs it. That is the difference between a salon that smells of monomer and one that does not.
Why does monomer smell linger in a salon?
Because it is a vapour, not a dust. Filing dust is heavy enough to fall onto the desk; monomer vapour disperses through the room and stays airborne, which is why a salon can look spotless and still smell strongly the moment someone walks in.
That is also why the usual remedies disappoint. An open window relies on weather you do not control. A desk fan moves the vapour rather than removing it. Scented candles and plug-ins add a smell on top of a smell. None of them take anything out of the air.
How do you get rid of monomer smell for good?
Capture it where it is produced. An extractor sited at the station pulls vapour across the work area and through activated carbon before it has the chance to spread, so the room never accumulates it in the first place.
Activated carbon is the active ingredient, and quantity is what makes the difference. A token carbon pad in a desktop fan does very little; a unit carrying kilograms of carbon does the job for months. This is the specification worth comparing between products.

Most salons with fixed stations are better served by wall-mounted units, which free the desk entirely and treat the space around the technician as well as the work itself. Home-based and mobile technicians almost always want a desktop unit they can move and store.
What are nail technicians actually breathing?
A working day at an acrylic station means repeated exposure to monomer vapour and fine filing dust. Technicians commonly report headaches, throat irritation and a smell that follows them home on their clothes and hair.
Extraction at the station addresses the source rather than masking it.
