Source Capture vs Room Air Purifier: Which Does a Salon Actually Need?

A salon air purifier cleans the air of the whole room; source capture - extraction at the nail station - removes dust and vapour at the point they are made, before they reach anyone's face. They are not rivals, and the honest answer to "which does a salon need" is usually both, in a particular order. HSE's order is clear: its nail bar sheet SR13 names local exhaust ventilation at the station - "a downdraught table or a movable hood" - as the first equipment control, and "a good standard of general ventilation" as the supporting one. A room purifier is general ventilation.

What is source capture?

Source capture is extraction with its intake at the place the contaminant is produced: for a nail station, a downdraught grille in the desk under the client's hands, or a hood or arm beside them. HSE calls this local exhaust ventilation, LEV, and its instruction is precise - the nails should be "over the downdraught or as close to the extraction hood as possible."

The logic is geometric. Filing dust is produced under the file, at face height; monomer vapour comes off the dappen dish and the working bead. Both are made within arm's reach of the technician. An intake at that point takes them out of the air before they travel; an intake across the room meets them after they have passed the person doing the work. What does a room air purifier do?

A room purifier draws the room's air through a particulate filter - HEPA-grade in the units we supply - and usually an activated carbon stage, and returns it cleaner. It deals with what is already in the room: the dust that escaped the desk, the vapour that spread, the material people carry in, the smell of the last client's treatment. It is general ventilation in HSE's terms, sitting alongside open windows and powered wall or window fans as the way a room gets "a sufficient quantity of fresh or purified air," which the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 6, require of every enclosed workplace.

What it cannot do is intercept dust and vapour at the desk. A purifier in the corner of a nail bar is working on air that has already crossed the technician's breathing zone. That is not a criticism of purifiers; it is a description of where they sit in the sequence.

Which does HSE ask for first?

Source capture. SR13 is HSE's "control approach 2" sheet for nail bars, which it labels engineering control, and its first equipment point is LEV at the station. General ventilation follows, with SR13 suggesting "powered wall- or window-mounted fans to supply a through flow of clean air," and a requirement that extracted air be "discharged to a safe place outside the building" or "correctly filtered before being returned."

The sheet also rules out the shortcut salons reach for. Respiratory protective equipment "is not normally needed" - the controls are meant to do the job - and face coverings "are not acceptable as a control measure." So the question for a salon is not "purifier or masks"; it is "capture at the desk, then what for the room."

When does a salon need both?

When it does enhancements at more than one station and has clients in the room all day - which is most nail bars. Source capture at each enhancement station handles the dust and vapour at the moment they are produced; the purifier handles the fraction that escapes and the room's general load. A salon with a manicure-only table and a consultation area may need extraction only where filing happens and a purifier for the rest.

The mistake to avoid is buying in the wrong order: a large purifier for the room while the enhancement station still has nothing at the desk. It treats the symptom in the corner and leaves the source at the technician's face, and it is not what SR13 describes. What about filters and maintenance for each?

Both live or die by their filters. Extraction at a monomer station needs an activated carbon stage, because carbon is what holds vapour and odour, and a particulate stage for dust; a purifier needs HEPA-grade filtration and, in a salon, a carbon stage too. We sell our carbon refills by weight - a quantity of granular carbon, not a thin impregnated pad - because the amount of carbon is what decides how long it keeps working, and we keep replacement filters for every unit we supply in stock.

The statutory side differs. Source capture is LEV, and SR13 says LEV "require[s] a statutory 'thorough examination and test' (TExT)" by a competent person "at least once every 14 months," with records kept "for at least five years." A room purifier is maintained as the manufacturer advises and logged, but it is not LEV. Both belong in the maintenance log SR13 recommends.

How should you decide for your room?

Count the stations where filing or monomer work happens; each needs a capture point. Then look at the room - its size, how many people share it, how often the door opens - and size a purifier to that. Then decide the order of spending: stations first, room second, paperwork throughout. A wall-mounted unit with its hood brought to the hands can capture at the station and filter the air it returns, but a unit placed away from the desk is a room purifier, whatever it is called. Judge by where the intake sits.
